Mission Statement

Friendship School is an independent, non-profit school for children of average to above average intelligence with learning differences (specific language-based learning differences such as Dyslexia). We exist to provide our students with the learning strategies, organizational skills, and study skills they will need to maximize their potential at Friendship School and as they move on to other traditional educational setting. Friendship School strives to create an environment in which each student can use their strengths to grow in competence, resilience, and self-esteem. Students at Friendship School receive daily 1-on-1 tutoring in reading, oral language, written language, spelling, and/or handwriting with Orton-Gillinghma trained tutors.

Description

The Friendship School, serves children with language-based learning differences (dyslexia) in grades 1-8 in Carroll, Frederick, Howard, Montgomery, Prince Georges, and Baltimore Counties. Friendship School was founded in 1998 by a group of dedicated parents and educators. Our students are bright and often gifted in many ways (particularly in talents such as leadership, arts, drama, music, and spatial abilities), but they have difficulties with reading, writing, and spelling and need to be taught in a very specific and systematic way to break the reading code. We use a one-to-one tutoring method (the Orton-Gillingham approach) that was developed in the 1920s and that has been proven as a best practice method in agreement with the findings of the National Institutes of Health and the National Reading Panel. We are working to share this way of teaching with other schools, higher education, and the greater community through outreach efforts, so that more children have the opportunity to have success in reading and academics and to have many more choices in life.
