Mission Statement

The purpose of the Volunteer Services Department is to empower individuals to the productive use of their talents, skills and gifts in providing the highest level of quality service to the patrons of the Allen County Public Library. Adopted July, 1994; Revised, October, 1996


The Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana, serves a community of 300,000 with a main library and 13 branches. The library provides free access to information via adult and children programming, reading and reference materials, videos, sound recordings, CD Roms, computer software and InterNet access to individuals of all ages. Since the Library's beginning in 1895, a team of high-caliber volunteers have given of their time, talents and skills to enhance the abilities of paid staff. Working together with employees, a team of 600 volunteers deliver quality service to the patrons of the library. The goal of the volunteer services department is to match the skills and interests of individuals to the needs and tasks of agencies within the library. We strive for win-win situations for volunteers and staff.
