Many children in Nepal are deprived of attention, homework help, and good nutrition. Their families are poor and do not have the time nor money to support them in their child care. When their school day ends, these children return to their homes. They then spend the rest of the day taking care of their siblings or roaming the streets. Most of these children end up leaving school early. For example they find work as child laborers in restaurants, factories and hotels. Or as trash collectors. Most of these children are going to government schools within which the standard of education is lower. The parents cannot pay the expensive fees for private schools. After School Program To help these children to further develop themselves, Volunteer Society Nepal is starting an After School Program that offers children the opportunity to get guidance. They can get guidance with their homework, explore their own ideas, create through art, connect through music, dance, and play games. Volunteers can help these children by providing them with these after school activities and guiding them with their homework. The children are mostly between the ages of four and fifteen and have a basic understanding of English. Our Goals Our goal is to uphold the value that every child has a right to: safe shelter, proper hygiene, food and education no matter where they are born. And all children should enjoy childhood where they feel loved and looked after. They should be provided with the tools to become strong and independent adults. Your support and care will go on a long way in helping many children. Children who otherwise may not have the opportunity to engage in a secure and positive life. With the average annual income of just 250 euros a year, your money will be go further in helping those who are in need of help the most. Join our Volunteering programs We offer volunteering opportunities depending on your skills and interests to make a difference by joining our volunteering, internship, charity tourism programs so that we can run our projects smoothly. To protect the children from harm, Volunteer Society Nepal asks each volunteer to sign the VSN Child and The VSN Child and Vulnerable Adult Protection Policy. Activities as a Volunteer Help the children with their schoolwork and homework Organize camp and tours to various places on their vacations Play games Teach drawing classes Have fun organizing singing, dancing and painting Organize other activities that children enjoy. https://www.volunteerworldnepal.org/program/child-development-volunteer/

Special Needs Help children become more independent and make them feel worthwhile. Join us for our 3 or 4 week special Volunteer and Tour Nepal program and volunteer in one of our centers for children with disabilities! As a volunteer you will help disabled children by learning, dancing, playing games and helping their caretakers with daily tasks and chores. Do you want to put a smile on these children’s faces? Then this will be an incredible experience for you. The situation of People with Disabilities in Nepal Most disabled individuals in Nepal are ignored and neglected; often locked out of sight in dark rooms. This is because their family members feel ashamed at having lost prestige and respect in the community through the persons disability. Often these children live a life where they feel no love, care or self worth. Some are even reduced to begging on the streets. Volunteer in Nepal with Volunteer Society Nepal and give these people the support they deserve. What does a volunteer in a Disabled home or center do? Volunteers spend up to 6 hours a day at the center, assisting caregivers in preparing and running activities for the students. For those who are able to learn, the volunteers can teach the children basic English. Volunteers can also help to plan outings in the local area and design creative learning sessions. Depending on the volunteer’s level of experience you may provide more education on care methods to the Nepali staff. Or you can do some vocational training and set up income-generating programs. You can also introduce the use of ICT technology in the student’s learning and play. Do I need any specific skills or qualifications for this placement? If volunteers have had previous experience with disabled children then they may enjoy this placement more. However, previous experience is not a requirement. When choosing to work at the disabled center you must be patient, friendly and approachable. This work can be very challenging because of all the different learning and physical difficulties encountered. But the staff at the center are always on hand to help guide you. Where in Nepal can I volunteer in a Center for Children with Disabilities? The centers for disabled children are located in different areas in Kathmandu. We also partner with a school for children with autism which is located in Pokhara. There is also a center for children with disabilities just outside of Kathmandu in the countryside.

Train, Teach or Assist in Schools As a volunteer you will give your students better opportunities in life. Train, teach or assist with English, Math, Science or ICT. Join us for our 3 or 4 week special Volunteer and Tour Nepal program. Volunteer in one of our schools and go on a tour of Nepal after! As a volunteer you will help teachers and children to improve in these subjects. Either by training the teachers, assisting in classes or you teaching yourself. Volunteers may also get involved in extra lessons for struggling children or lead recreational activities in the schools. The situation of schools in Nepal The schools throughout Nepal are in desperate need of extra help with their English, Math,Science, Sports, Music, Dance and ICT classes. English increasingly becomes the language of business and opportunity. Fluency in English creates more opportunities for children when they leave school. Math is always something that teachers find complicated to teach and many teachers do not have any experience in ICT. What does a volunteer do? Volunteers either train, teach or assist in teaching at primary or secondary schools in Kathmandu, Pokhara or in small villages in the mountains. Volunteers spend up to 6 hours a day at the school. Depending on your experience you may: Train: Observe the teachers and give feedback At the beginning you will work closely with the Principal of the school. You will establish where there is most need for teacher training and support. From here you can use your own initiative to build a framework for providing teacher training. You will spend up to 6 hours a day at the school and conducting your work in an office. Overall, you will be responsible for training teachers, sit in with lessons and conducting showcase lessons in your preferred subject. If you have 2 months or more to spend at the school then you can help plan the subject curriculum for the term or year. We like to encourage you to bring new and innovative teaching methods to the classrooms. They help the school determine what resources are needed and how to get hold of them. Teach: Give classes on your own As a teacher you look at where the need is most in terms of teaching and step in where is needed. Sometimes there are not enough teachers and you will teach a class yourself. It is also possible that the teacher is there and you will teach the class together. The teacher can learn from your teaching methodologies by observing and joining the teaching. Assist: Be a teacher’s assistant As an assistant you will work alongside a local teacher helping with all the subjects. We encourage you to think of creative ways to help teaching the children, for example to bring in new teaching resources. The age of the children varies from 4 to 16 years. You can decide which age group you like to assist. Do I need any qualifications or skills to do this work? For being a teacher’s assistant you do not need any qualifications for this placement, but you do need to have a good command of the English language. It helps if you have had experience of working with children in the past, but if you have not then being a confident and enthusiastic person is important. There will be basic support materials to use but these are always in short supply, and so anything you can provide to help will always be appreciated. On arrival you will meet with the principal to discuss your ideas, aspirations and experience. At all times we ensure that you are comfortable with your level of commitment and involvement. Don’t worry, you won’t be thrown into a classroom of 60 children on your first day, unless you want to! For being a teacher we advise you to have some teaching experience. If not, you can observe and assist in the classes first and step in when you have prepared yourself well enough to teach. The placement as Teacher Trainer is for qualified teachers, teaching assistants, or TEFL holders only.
