Mission Statement

America's Foundation for Chess (AF4C) is a nonprofit agency whose mission is to strengthen the minds and character of young people by advancing chess in our schools and culture.

Description

Chess has been shown to improve visual memory, attention span, problem solving skills, and spatial reasoning among children who play - often resulting in higher test scores and greater intellectual and social maturity. But does chess belong in the classroom? AF4C believes that chess is one of the most effective teaching tools available, and is leading the charge to bring the game into American classrooms. Our "First Move" Scholastic Program, which targets 2nd and 3rd grade students, is designed to increase academic achievement and promote personal development for children - giving them skills and confidence, and helping prepare them for life-long success. Using an innovative and highly regarded standards-based curriculum, and through modeling, workshops and mentoring, we educate and support teachers to help them teach their students.
