Mission Statement
Ladyfest South is a non-profit, Southern-based, four-day festival that showcases, celebrates, and promotes the artistic, organizational, and political talents of women in order to raise money for social service projects that assist women. We are fiscally sponsored by Women's Resource Center to End Domestic Violence. Our Beneficiaries this year are: DeKalb Rape Crisis Center, Youth Pride (Atlanta), and Women's Resource Center to End Domestic Violence Featuring talented women from diverse backgrounds, Ladyfest South includes live music, spoken word, and theatre performances, as well as, visual art exhibits, films, workshops, and more. It is an empowering endeavor built upon a solid foundation of activism and education mixed with a little entertainment and fun. Volunteer-driven and organized by women, Ladyfest South welcomes everyone- of all ages, genders, backgrounds and communities- to attend and participate.
Description
First held in 2000 in Olympia, Washington, Ladyfest was marketed as "a non-profit, community-based event designed by and for women to showcase, celebrate and encourage the artistic, organizational and political work and talents of women." It featured performances by bands, spoken word artists, authors, visual artists, and included workshops, panels, and dance parties. The concept and energy has since spread to countries such as Sweden, The Netherlands, Scotland, and Austria. It has also been planned in states such as Virginia, Texas, Ohio and Michigan. The first Ladyfest South occurred in 2002 and benefited Project Safe in Athens, Georgia and Refuge House in Jacksonville, Florida. Ladyfest South 2004
