Mission Statement

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center provides a home for the birth, nurture and celebration of our organizations, institutions and culture; cares for our individuals and groups in need; educates the public and our community; and empowers our individuals and groups to achieve their fullest potential.

Description

The Center's Mental Health and Social Services Department exists to bring lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people out of isolation and connect them to proactive, healthy, and affirmative counseling services and activities. Youth Enrichment Services (Y.E.S.) is an activities-based alcohol, drug abuse, and HIV-prevention program for LGBT and questioning young people between the ages of 13 and 21. Since its founding in 1989, Y.E.S. has offered free creative arts workshops, support groups, short-term counseling, peer-based programming, leadership training, and positive social alternatives to hundreds of young people many of whom are considered to be at high risk. Our Public Policy Department provides leadership in several specific areas: voter mobilization and registration, the rights of LGBT families, humane treatment and appropriate prevention services for people recovering from drug or alcohol addiction, and public funding for LGBT health and human services. The Cultural Programming Department sponsors a wide array of cultural programs that enable us to expand the meaning of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender life. Our programs celebrate the richness, complexity, and diversity of our communities through art, poetry, film, dance, literature, history, and music.
