Literacy NJ is a non-profit whose purpose is to promote and foster increased literacy in Gloucester County and contiguous areas through volunteer teaching of and aid to adults who are illiterate or semi-literate, or for whom English is not their native language, and to encourage and increase literacy through voluntary programs. The organization believes that each person, prospective client and volunteer, is of equal worth and conducts all its business in accordance with this philosophy.
LNJ recruits and trains volunteers from all walks of life to be tutors for adults. It offers two programs: In the Basic Literacy program, tutors are matched with adults who need reading, writing, spelling and comprehension instruction. In its English as a Second Language (ESL) program, tutors provide conversational English to foreign speaking adults. The approach is student based. Tutors are trained to develop personalized instruction plans for their students. Tutoring is designed to meet the needs of the students by utilizing high interest materials and techniques effective in the instruction of adults. Instruction is one to one or small group in a public place. The program is accredited by ProLiteracy, a national literacy organization.
