Our Immigrant Services program is looking for volunteers who are bilingual in Bengali, Arabic, Haitian-Creole, and Chinese to support our community outreach work in Queens! Bilingual volunteers play a vital role in connecting our organization with the diverse immigrant community we serve. This role involves actively engaging with community members, promoting awareness of our services, and facilitating connections to resources and support. Volunteers work closely with our team to contribute to outreach efforts. This may include: Attending community events and gatherings to represent our organization. Providing information about our free programs and services for immigrants, such as English classes and legal services. Conducting educational workshops on relevant topics, such as immigrant rights. Translating our promotional materials and information into additional languages. Schedule: 2-4 days per month with flexible schedule Community events and outreach activities may take place during weekday mornings, afternoons, and evenings or Saturdays Benefits: Opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the community. Jacob Riis is looking for substitute teachers who are available to fill in in case a regular teacher calls out. Subbing is in-person at our two locations in LIC and Astoria. This wouldn't be a regular commitment, rather we would put you on our call list for the times when we need a sub. Prior teaching experience is helpful but not required, and a lesson plan and materials will always be provided. Class schedules include morning (9:00 - 12:00 pm Tuesday to Thursday), evening (6:00 - 9:00 pm Tuesday to Thursday), and/or Saturday (9:30am - 4:00pm) at our two program sites in Long Island City and Astoria, Queens. Primary Job Responsibilities: Participant Interaction Provide content-based English language instruction at beginning, intermediate and/or advanced levels. · Using the lesson plans provided, deliver material through a variety of instructional methods that are adapted to students’ diverse learning styles. Provide authentic language tasks, interactive activities, and opportunities to practice speaking and writing for fluency. Administrative Functions · Review lesson plan and materials provided in advance of subbing. Arrive 15 min before the class begins to get acclimated, prepare class materials, and set up the classroom. · Submit signed daily attendance sheets for program records. Are you looking to learn more about a different culture? Do you want to find a new friend and to develop interpersonal skills? If yes, this opportunity is for you! Riis Settlement is looking for volunteers to support students enrolled in our adult English classes for immigrants through online 1:1 tutoring. By providing extra language practice outside of ESOL classes, you will help students improve their English skills for practical use such as in social, educational, or professional settings. Volunteers will be matched with an individual student based on mutual availability. Tutor resources and study materials will be provided. Tutoring starts mid-January. Qualifications: - Able to commit for 8-10 weeks - Able to use GoogleMeet/ Zoom - Based in the USA - Be at least 18 years old - High level of English proficiency - Able to motivate and engage students Bilingual volunteers (Spanish, Mandarin, etc), volunteers with teaching or tutoring experience, and volunteers with TESOL/TEFL certifications are highly preferred This is a remote volunteering opportunity.
