Description
The South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve is a part of a system of 26 reserves that are bioregional representatives of the different types of estuarine ecosystems. The estuaries in this system are protected through management for long-term research, environmental monitoring, education, and stewardship. South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve is nearly 5000 acres of tidal wetlands, upland forest, and freshwater floodplains located at the center of a natural basin that forms the South Slough, an arm of the Coos Bay estuary. The reserve includes 1,000 acres of open water and tidal wetland habitat surrounded by 3,800 acres of forested uplands.
