Mission Statement

Posse is a college access and youth leadership development program that identifies, recruits, and selects student leaders from public high schools and sends them in groups called Posses to some of the top colleges and universities in the country. A Posse is a multicultural team made up of ten students. It acts as a traveling support system to ensure that each Posse Scholar succeeds and graduates from college. Posse Scholars receive four-year, full tuition leadership scholarships from Posse partner colleges and universities.

Description

The Posse Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that recruits and trains diverse teams (posses) of public high school students who exhibit strong leadership potential. Since 1989, Posse's partner universities have awarded over $265 million in four-year, full-tuition scholarships to over 2,650 Posse Scholars from Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and Washington, D.C.
Through a carefully structured, three-month selection process, Posse candidates are evaluated using criteria beyond academic achievement, including leadership talent, desire to succeed and ability to work constructively with people from diverse backgrounds. Once a student is selected as a Posse Scholar, she/he attends an after-school, training program for the eight months directly before college begins. The Posse Program continues to work with its scholars in college through an on-campus program and a career development program. Critical to the pre-collegiate work with Posse Scholars is Posse's unique Writing Program. Posse's current university partners include Babson, Bowdoin, Brandeis, Bryn Mawr, Carleton, Claremont McKenna, Colby, Denison, DePauw, Dickinson, Grinnell, Hamilton, Lafayette, Middlebury, Trinity, University of Illinois, Urbana, Champaign, University of Wisconsin - Madison, Vanderbilt, and Wheaton. The Posse Foundation operates six successful sites in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, NYC and Washington, D.C.
