Mission Statement

The purpose of the Station is to develop and implement ecological technologies that will help to integrate modern aquaculture with a healthy coastal environment; develop pilot integrated land management projects with native species, and finally, promote and participate within the community in different local community development projects on issues such as health, education and small enterprises.

Description

In July 1989, the government of Ecuador approved the establishment of the Jatun Sacha Foundation. A private, non-profit Ecuadorian foundation, Jatun Sacha is now the largest non-profit conservation organizations in Ecuador. Besides protecting ecologically important forest habitats, the is nationally and internationally recognized as leaders in the development of innovative and concrete programs in community agroforestry, environmental education, aquaculture and public health. The foundation has been selected by CARE-USAID to manage a $3.5 million community reforestation project, SUBIR, in the Esmeraldas province in northwestern Ecuador.
