Mission Statement

The mission of Newton County Reads (NCR) is to develop sustainable, healthy attitudes towards literacy in Newton County by
marketing to show the need and benefits of improved education, by providing
adult literacy, GED preparation and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs
and by directing and maintaining NCR as a Georgia Certified Literate Community
Program (CLCP).

Description

NCR was created and recognized in 2000 as a local chapter of the Georgia CLCP, a literacy credentialing organization of the Georgia Department of Technical Schools and Adult Education. July 2002, NCR became a 501 © 3 Adult
Literacy organization. In 2003, NCR
partnered with the local Newton County Rotary Club to obtain data on the literacy needs that local employers saw in their workforces and the actions that they were currently taking to address these problems. This appears to be the
first community-based workforce literacy survey of its kind in Newton
County. As a CLCP, NCR established a 10 year goal of increasing the literacy levels of 51 percent of the Newton County’s 11,000 undereducated adults. In 2008 the literacy programs in Newton
County reached that goal and now Newton County is considered a Certified
Literate Community. NCR literacy
programs have helped well over 6,000 Newton County citizens in 11 years. In 2011 the need for literacy and GED programs has increased to reflect the
increasing drop-out rates in Newton County and NCR has expanded sites to meet the needs of the community.
