Here's a sample of our volunteer opportunities:VIEW AS
ABCD LearningWorks has integrated adult education services and work-force development programs under one roof at 19 Temple Place. LearningWorks provides Boston-area residents and employers with the best possible education, training and employment services. Our Downtown Adult Literacy Program provides classes in beginning reading, basic skills, GED preparation, the External Diploma Program, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and Citizenship preparation. Our classes are free to low-income Boston residents over 18 years old and allow for self-paced learning. Students also have the opportunity to learn basic computer skills, participate in one-on-one tutoring, and receive academic and vocational counseling. ABCD LearningWorks provides opportunities for people to join its efforts to improve the quality of life for Boston's residents. It offers people volunteer opportunities whether as a means of increasing their skills or as a way of giving back to society. The LearningWorks program offers volunteer opportunities for individuals and groups who are seeking meaningful, structured volunteerism.
The Downtown Adult Literacy program recruits, trains, and matches volunteer tutors which adult literacy students. The learners' classroom instruciton is supplemented and enhanced by two hours of one-on-one tutoring every week. There is also the opportunity to volunteer as a classroom assistant. Volunteers receive 15 hours pre-service training, support from teachers and staff, and the chance to see their efforts visibly rewarded by the increased academic proficiency and self-esteem of their learners.
