Program Description Special Event Volunteers support various events at the Toledo Zoo throughout the calendar year. Events are typically held on weekends, and most are held in the evenings, with some events ending as late as 11:00 p.m. Volunteers will perform a variety of functions, including, but not limited to: · Providing directions or information to event participants · Pouring beverages/serving beverages to event participants · Assisting staff with general event logistics (set-up, tear-down, registration, etc.) Requirements · Events may require sitting or standing, depending on the event or responsibilities · You may need to lift and carry items up to 10 lbs. over short distances List of Sample Events (2024 Calendar) Events marked with * require volunteers to be 21 years or older · Dart Frog Dash (May) · ZOOtoDO (September) · Sip Sip Hooray Wine Fest* (September) · ZOOtoberfest* (October) · Roar & Pour* (October) · Brewdolph Bash* (November) · Polar Paws & Santa Claws Run (December) · Other events/special projects as offered on the calendar Time Commitment Special Event Volunteers are required to: · Submit a volunteer application, attend an interview, and complete an orientation · Support at least 2 special events during the calendar year · Event volunteers will be notified of events via email and can sign up for events through an on-line scheduling system.

The Aviary/Barnyard Volunteer Keeper position is a temporary volunteer position running for approximately 4 months. Volunteers are accepted for a semester long placement. Requirements: Currently enrolled at a college or university, or have graduated within 1 year with a degree, in biology, pre-vet, vet tech, environmental science, or related program Sophomore, junior, or senior status, or 2nd year of an Associate’s degree program Submit the following materials by the application deadline: Volunteer Application Resume Letter of Interest highlighting the reason you are interested in this position, knowledge or experiences you hope to gain, and your personal qualities, skills, or experiences that could help you be successful in this position. Schedule: 16 hours per week minimum Hours are generally completed during regular hours (7:30 - 4:30 p.m.) for 2 full days a week. Ideally, these would be 2 consecutive days. Responsibilities: Provide daily care of the animals including cleaning, feeding, and behavior enrichment. Species include a mix of domestic hoofstock and birds. There could be times this position will assist with additional exhibits in our Aviary department. Assist keepers with exhibit maintenance, including lobby and guest walkways or other cleaning and miscellaneous yard maintenance. Assist keepers with special projects as needed. Actively engage guests in educational conversations. Support office projects, including filing and updating records. The Zoo Educator program is a year-round, ongoing volunteer opportunity for adults, ages 18 and above, who have great people skills and a deep love of animals, nature, and conservation. Zoo Educators engage with guests at exhibits throughout the Zoo, sharing fun information about the animals and the Zoo's conservation efforts.

The Exhibit Guide Program supports the Zoo’s educational and interpretive needs in specific areas within the Zoo. Responsibilities will include: Greet and instruct guests at animal contact exhibits including the shark and ray touch tank and Nancy L and Martin Davidson Barnyard. Engage guests in educational conversations and maintain a safe animal contact experience at the sturgeon touch tank. Educate guests at the elephant exhibit, focusing on topics related to animal welfare and conservation. Educate guests at Galapagos Gardens, helping guests develop an appreciation for and understanding of reptiles. Training Exhibit Guides will complete a 2 step training process: Half Day Orientation: review of Zoo Volunteer handbook, techniques to engage guests, responsibilities, and animal information Mentoring Session: shadow a volunteer from our Zoo Educator program for at least 1 shift Requirements Complete the required training program Give at least 25 hours of service, not including the half day orientation Schedule volunteer time in advance Inform the Volunteer Department if you can not make a scheduled shift.
