Our Meals on Wheels clients are more isolated than ever because of the pandemic. This program is a new way to provide contact for our MOW clients who are homebound, living alone or disabled. We know that lack of frequent contact with others can lead to deeper issues such as loneliness, depression and malnutrition. We are looking for volunteers who could call specific clients once or twice a month to check in and see how they are doing. This can be a friendly and casual phone call and a chance for us to let them know CES has other programs that can help them. We will provide talking points, a Frequently Asked Questions sheet and other information that will help our clients deal with these uncertain times. If they are having problems we can help with, you would forward the information to our coordinator. The calling can be done form your home at any time that works for you and the client. PLEASE: at this time we are only accepting volunteers who are located in the Twin Cities area because they are familiar with local services.

We deliver groceries to elderly and disabled people who can’t get to our food shelf. Volunteers begin at CES where you will add perishable items to pre-packed non-perishable groceries. Then, drive to a nearby apartment complex where you will distribute the groceries to each client. This is a unique opportunity to interact with our food shelf clients. We deliver to each apartment, so there is some interaction with people who are home-bound and don't get to meet many people.

The CES summer program provides activities for children while waiting for their family’s turn to receive food. Some of the activities include playdough, art projects, simple jewelry making, puzzles, blocks and books. Children are free to move from one activity to another as they wish. The atmosphere is casual and inviting with children coming and going at different times. Simply sitting with children and talking and interacting while they play or do projects is key to the success of the program. Each child receives a book to keep and a snack pack when they leave. We set up at 11:30 and the children can participate from noon to about 2pm. Cleanup takes less than ½ an hour. The program starts on Friday, July 1 and goes to Friday, August 19. Even volunteering for one Friday would be helpful, and if you speak Spanish-that would be great!! This program is set up in a large room with an ISO-Aire unit that cleans the air. We are requesting that the food shelf clients wear masks, but I don't expect the children to be wearing masks.
