Mission Statement

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Description

We need large numbers of volunteers to help make our local competitions a success. Volunteers fill positions such as awards presenter, concessions, event officials, & athlete escorts.

In addition we are also always looking for dedicated individuals to help as coaches for athletes for regional & state level competitions. Seasonally, we train athletes in 16 sports. Each sport practices on a weekly schedule during their season. Times & locations vary.

I started volunteering a few years ago with Wake Special Olympics. I have enjoyed working with the kids and the staff at each event. The staff are polite, even as they are busily managing the event, working with the volunteers and keeping over 100 kids happy. The staff are friendly and informative during every interaction I have had with them. I look forward to seeing the staff and the kids at the next event.

I have volunteered with Wake Special Olympics for 4 years for multiple events each year. Staff always go over expectations in the beginning, answer any questions and come around to do demonstrations at the stations. The staff are also present during the event to help as needed. I have always been treated with respect and enjoy every experience that I have. I also volunteer with the State and have good experiences with them as well. I volunteer so that the kids have a good experience and can have fun. Volunteers are needed for the kids to continue to have good experiences. I will continue to volunteer when ever possible!
