Mission Statement

To promote service learning and student civic engagement in K-12 schools and higher education institutions throughout Florida and to help break the cycle of poverty in low-income communities.

Description

The FASS VISTA Initiative is part of a larger national program called AmeriCorps*VISTA. VISTA stands for Volunteers In Service To America. Since 1965, VISTA members age 18 and older have dedicated one year of their lives to building the capacity of low-income communities to meet local needs. FASS VISTA supports this national movement by investing in Florida's students, schools, and communities through coordination and funding of VISTA placements. For FASS VISTA programs, AmeriCorps*VISTA members partner with teachers and students to build capacity within service-learning programs by designing, facilitating, and coordinating student empowerment through service activities. K-12 Service-Learning Projects: AmeriCorps*VISTAs are placed at schools, school districts, and not-for-profit organizations to help maintain and expand current service-learning initiatives. Higher Education Civic Engagement Projects: AmeriCorps*VISTAs work hand-in-hand with service-learning centers and community service offices at private and public universities and colleges to help facilitate a range of programs addressing issues from literacy to the digital divide.
