The Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority shall plan, acquire, develop, construct, operate and maintain a system of regional parks, within the geographicl limits of the political subdivisions composing the Authority
Description
The regional park authority is a multi jurisdiction agency supported by 6 political jurisdictions throughout northern virginia. We own approximately 11,000 acres of forest and open space lands primarily along the Occoquan and Potomac River waterways. The park authority offers numerous recreation and cultural resources including golf courses, aquatic facilities, camp grounds, nature centers, historic house museums, athletic fields, botanical gardens and a public shooting center. We also provide a 45 mile linear trail connecting Washington D.C. to the Blue Ride Mountains and a premier rowing facilitie. The operations of the park authority are 80% self funded through fees and grants, which minimizes the dependancy on tax dollars. With a small full time staff or approximatly 100 people the park authority is largely reliant on part time and volunteer involvement.
