Mission Statement

CBM CARES Columbia, SC is a "best practice" evidence based mentoring program using the national standards of the "elements of effective practice" that is evaluated semi annually by independent consultants.

CBM CARES Columbia, SC mission is to improve the quality of life of African American males in middle school by providing youth with the inspiration through positve role models that mirror their image.

Description

You will be matched with one male mentee between the ages of 10 & 14 or up to 3 males for group mentoring. It is desired that the mentoring relationship lasts for minimum of 12 months.

One to one mentor and mentee are expected to interact for at least 8 hours per month, some of which could be over the phone. The mentoring sessions can take place in the schools and at locations in the community as well as during the structured activities organized by the project.

Group mentors are expected to spend eight hours a month with their group at the in schools sessions and at the once monthly structure group outings organized by the project.

As a mentor, you will work with the CBM CARES project to improve the mentee's academic skills, school attendance, school attachment/pride, self-esteem, character development and hope for the future. You will be required to participate in mentor orientation and training sessions and in additon agree to provide the CBM CARES project with information regarding changes in your life that may affect your continued ability and/or eligibility to serve as a mentor.

CBM will conduct a persoanl inteview, reference checks and a FBI fingerprint background check to determine suitability for involvement with the CBM CARES project.
