Notre Dame Middle School is a Catholic school for young women sponsored by the School Sisters of Notre Dame. Following in the Christian tradition, Notre Dame fosters respect, responsibility and sharing of personal talents while preparing students for admittance to a college preparatory high school. In a bi-literate (English and Spanish) setting, with emphasis on leadership skills, critical thinking, and social justice young women are empowered to make positive contributions to society.
Three principles guide the educational process: Responsibility, Regalo ("Gift" in Spanish), and Respect. Our students live our guiding values everyday.
NDMS is located on the south side in the heart of Milwaukee’s Hispanic community. The majority of our middle school students come from a community bordered on the north and south by National and Greenfield Avenues; on the east by South 6th Street, and on the west by South 27th Street. It is a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood with White, Black and Hmong minorities. It has the demographics one would expect...many immigrants, low-income levels, low education attainment levels...with many individuals and families not fully integrated into or comfortable with Anglo society.
It is against this backdrop that NDMS carries out its mission. Founded in 1996 by the School Sisters of Notre Dame, NDMS began with two classes in 5th and 6th grades with a total of 26 students. Students of the first 6th grade class graduated from college in May 2007. NDMS has continued growing with over 132 students in grades 5 through 8.
