Mount St. Helens was dedicated as a National Volcanic Monument in 1982. It is an amazing area that was set aside to protect the significant features of the Monument; to protect public health and safety; to provide for natural recovery and processes; to emphasize recreation and interpretation; and to preserve and encourage opportunities for scientific study and research.
