Our Mission is to advocate for the preservation, restoration and stewardship of Harrisburg’s architectural heritage. HHA promotes economic development that respects out cultural legacy for the benefit of people who live in, work in, and visit Harrisburg.
Through advocacy and education, HHA helps to preserve the city's human scale and evidence of its physical and social history. It seeks to contribute to the city's economic vitality and to build an appreciation of the city's history and a sense of community and place. Our mission is not merely to save old buildings but to help members of the community understand how these buildings and landmarks connect us to the past and provide a map for our future.
istoric Harrisburg Association, Inc. was established as a nonprofit organization in 1973. Since then, HHA has devoted itself to the revitalization and preservation of Harrisburg's neighborhoods and business districts. HHA's mission is to advocate for the preservation, restoration and stewardship of Harrisburg's architectural heritage. For the benefit of people who live in, work in, and visit Harrisburg, we promote economic development that will protect and enhance city's built environment.
HHA provides a variety of programs and services including, but not limited to neighborhood preservation support and organization; library and archives consultation and referral services; history information center; lectures, classes and workshops, newsletter and social media activities, monthly social events.
We aim not merely to save old buildings but to help members of the community understand how these buildings and landmarks connect us to the past and provide a map for our future. Two of HHA's most widely known events, the Candlelight House Tour and Elegant Progressions (co-sponsored with the Kidney Foundation of Central Pennsylvania), promote Harrisburg's historic and architecturally significant surroundings during the holiday season. During the national observation of Preservation Week, HHA hosts a special evening when we acknowledge historic, significant accomplishments in historic preservation with the presentation of bronze plaques or other awards to worthy properties and property owners. These awards are given to individuals and businesses that have done outstanding exterior restoration of an historic property.
Also, HHA's Community Historic Preservation Fund (CHPF), established in 1995, is a restricted fund for supporting preservation projects or efforts on behalf of the community at large.
