Mission Statement

Since 1968 the mission of NDC has remained constant - to mobilize volunteer design professionals and resources in support of community-sponsored initiatives that directly improve neighborhood livability and viability. NDC takes on projects that fit within this mission and serve to achieve community service goals: 1. To strengthen citizen involvement in neighborhood improvement initiatives; 2. To educate the public about the essential value of good design, planning, and preservation practices as community revitalization tools; and 3. To be a catalyst for increased investment for neighborhood development

Description

Baltimore neighborhood associations, local non-profits and community development corporations (CDC) work to improve their neighborhoods by renovating houses, fixing up parks and playgrounds, reclaiming abandoned structures for new community uses, and improving commercial districts. Unfortunately, many of these groups do not have the resources or expertise to get such community development projects off the ground. This is where the Neighborhood Design Center fulfills a critical need. NDC staff and volunteers provide conceptual building and site plans, preliminary feasibility studies and cost estimates, community planning, and development services that community groups and non-profits could not otherwise afford. Community groups use our work to apply for and win neighborhood project funding from a broad array of public and private sources.
