Mission Statement

The mission of The First Tee of Cleveland is to positively impact the lives of young people ages 8-18 by providing eduational programs that promote strong character development, instill life-enhancing values, and promote healthy choices through the game of golf.

The First Tee is a character education program that teaches Life Skills, fosters the development of Nine Core Values, and promotes healthy living through the game of golf. Literally no other youth sports initiative in the world does what we do. The First Tee of Cleveland serves children ages 8-18 throughout greater Cleveland. Using activity-based core lessons and a coach philosophy based on asking instead of telling, participants are encouraged to explore and discover their own unique skills and talents, and apply the lessons in class to home, school, and work. Respect is the cornerstone of our curriculum. Using Life Skills such as interpersonal skills, self-management, goal-setting, and resistance skills for core lesson themes, participants explore self-development while simultaneously ("seamlessly") developing golf skills and learning and appreciating golf’s culture of honesty and integrity. Classes are centered on our Life Skills,Nine Core Values and Nine Healthy Habits curriculum; encouraging participants to develop a positive, respectful "inner self," while developing an appreciation for the unique culture of golf. Progression is self-paced, and focuses on participants identifying and maximizing their potential on and off the golf course. Success is defined as being one’s own best coach, and being a person of strong character in and away from golf. We offer extended classes in caddying, club repair and assembly, nutrition and fitness, and financial literacy.
