Mission Statement

The mission of Experience Corps is to mobilize the time, talent, and experience of retirees and older adults to provide 1:1 intensive supplemental instructional support to elementary school students who have tested below grade-level proficiency in reading and literacy.

Description

Experience Corps is a nationally recognized instructional support program that recruits, screens, trains and manages teams of 7-10 member tutors within each of our partner schools throughout Philadelphia. All tutors receive extensive training in reading and literacy development, tutoring techniques and strategies, child social and emotional development, school and program polices, leadership, conflict management and communication.

Leadership Tutors serve 15 hours per week from October through May during the school day at an assigned school. Stipends for Leadership Tutors are available.

Associate Tutors serve 4-8 hours per week and are critical to Experience Corps' success. Although no stipend is available for Associate member tutors, they receive many other benefits and recognition, as well as training and support.
