Meals on Wheels delivers just over 1,500 meals a day to isolated seniors in Salt Lake County. This life sustaining accomplishment could not be completed without the support of our most valuable players, volunteers like you. We offer two volunteer opportunities in your community: Regular Route Volunteers who can make a commitment of one workday per week, and Back-up Meals on Wheels Volunteers who can make a commitment of at least one workday per month to fill in for regular route volunteers as your schedule allows. Each Meals on Wheels route has between 6-13 seniors, takes approximately one hour to deliver, and may be delivered anytime between 10:00am and 2:00pm, Monday - Friday. Plan to use your own vehicle. You are required to use our Mobile Meals app, which can be downloaded to your smartphone. We do not have volunteer opportunities on the weekends, evenings, or in the kitchen. All volunteers must complete a background check and volunteer orientation.

Volunteers help seniors with healthcare benefits information, healthcare fraud and abuse, and difficult health insurance concerns. Flexible scheduling. Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIP) tasks may include: Medicare presentation & enrollment events Medicare Part D screenings, counseling & enrollment Medicare Advantage screenings, counseling & enrollment Medigap/Medicare Supplement resources & counseling Medicaid & Extra Help applications Medicare and fraud & abuse public presentations Distribute information to the public, including doctor's offices and pharmacies Data entry & reporting Volunteer Requirements Pass a criminal background check Have no conflicts of interest Possess a valid Utah driver's license Maintain records accurately Be in compliance with HIPPA Maintain client confidentiality NOT enter into any financial or business relationship with ANY clients Contribute at least 8 hours per month and submit monthly reports Maintain patience and tactfulness Have the ability to work with diverse populations including those with significant physical and mental impairments For counselors - attend 40 hours of Medicare training Training and Support Orientation and training is provided to all volunteers prior to beginning assigned duties.

The program provides rides for older adults, 60 years of age or older, throughout Salt Lake County, to essential medical destinations such as dialysis, chemotherapy, doctor visits, etc. Volunteer drivers transport seniors to and from essential medical services. Volunteers must possess a current Utah Driver License; proof of current auto insurance; have a good driving record; pass an extensive background check; complete a Defensive Driving course and commit to working a 3-4 hour shifts at least 2 times per month. The program operates M-F 8-4. Volunteers need to be comfortable using a smartphone or tablet to access driving schedule. Completion of various training is required. One year commitment preferred.
