The Senior Companion program is an AmeriCorps Seniors program and provides volunteer opportunities for limited-income seniors to receive a small, tax-free stipend of $4.00 per hour while helping other seniors maintain their independence and providing respite to caregivers. Volunteers serve 20 hours per week and assist older adults with: light meal preparation, socialization, grocery shopping, getting to medical appointments, advocacy and other essential needs. Volunteers must be at least 55 years of age, able to pass an extensive FBI fingerprint background check and National Sex Offender Registry check. Have a monthly income of $2265 or less for a single person, $3052 or less for 2 family units. Able to serve 20 hours per week. The Foster Grandparent Program is a national service AmeriCorps Seniors volunteer program that provides income eligible people age 55 and older, who can commit 20 volunteer hours per week, to help at-risk children learn to read English. Foster Grandparent volunteers mentor, support and tutor at-risk children at elementary schools and preschools throughout Salt Lake County. Volunteers receive a non-taxable $4.00 per hour stipend as well as travel reimbursement (mileage or public transportation) to support their volunteer efforts. The stipend and travel reimbursement do not count as income when determining eligibility for benefits such as food assistance and housing. Foster Grandparent volunteers are age 55+, meet income requirements (about $2265 per month or less for one person), must pass a background check and volunteer for 20 hours per week. Orientation and training provided.

Volunteers help seniors with healthcare benefits information, healthcare fraud and abuse, and difficult health insurance concerns. Flexible scheduling. Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIP) tasks may include: Medicare presentation & enrollment events Medicare Part D screenings, counseling & enrollment Medicare Advantage screenings, counseling & enrollment Medigap/Medicare Supplement resources & counseling Medicaid & Extra Help applications Medicare and fraud & abuse public presentations Distribute information to the public, including doctor's offices and pharmacies Data entry & reporting Volunteer Requirements Pass a criminal background check Have no conflicts of interest Possess a valid Utah driver's license Maintain records accurately Be in compliance with HIPPA Maintain client confidentiality NOT enter into any financial or business relationship with ANY clients Contribute at least 8 hours per month and submit monthly reports Maintain patience and tactfulness Have the ability to work with diverse populations including those with significant physical and mental impairments For counselors - attend 40 hours of Medicare training Training and Support Orientation and training is provided to all volunteers prior to beginning assigned duties.

The program provides rides for older adults, 60 years of age or older, throughout Salt Lake County, to essential medical destinations such as dialysis, chemotherapy, doctor visits, etc. Volunteer drivers transport seniors to and from essential medical services. Volunteers must possess a current Utah Driver License; proof of current auto insurance; have a good driving record; pass an extensive background check; complete a Defensive Driving course and commit to working a 3-4 hour shifts at least 2 times per month. The program operates M-F 8-4. Volunteers need to be comfortable using a smartphone or tablet to access driving schedule. Completion of various training is required. One year commitment preferred.
