Mission Statement

The Fulbright Association is the membership organization of Fulbright alumni and supporters committed to fostering international awareness and understanding through advocating increased world-wide support for Fulbright exchanges; enriching the Fulbright experience; and facilitating lifelong interaction among alumni and current participants.

The Fulbright Association supports and promotes the Fulbright Program of international educational and cultural exchange. A private, nonprofit organization started by Fulbright alumni in February 1977, the Association facilitates relationships among, and the public service of, former Fulbright grantees. It also provides hospitality and enrichment activities for foreign Fulbright students, scholars, and teachers during their stay in the U.S. Membership is open to former Fulbright grantees and to those who support the ideals of the Fulbright Program but are not themselves grantees. Membership is also available to institutions and organizations. The Fulbright Association awards the annual J. William Fulbright Prize for International Understanding, which recognizes extraordinary contributions made by individuals, groups, or organizations in any part of the world to increasing mutual understanding and cooperation among peoples. The Prize includes a $50,000 award made possible by The Coca-Cola Foundation. Past Fulbright Prize laureates include Nelson Mandela, Jimmy Carter, Mary Robinson, Martti Ahtisaari, Kofi Annan, and, most recently, Sadako Ogata. The Fulbright Association annual conference and meeting of members are held in the fall, attracting approximately 350 participants. The 25th anniversary conference was held in Oct. 2002 and discussed the topic Dialogue of Cultures: Fulbright Contributions. The Association also coordinates home hospitality with alumni for visiting Fulbright scholars and students; produces a newsletter on alumni and chapter activities and Fulbright alumni organizations abroad; and gives support and information to U.S. chapters and foreign Fulbright organizations. The Association has two active task forces exploring the use of Fulbright alumni resources in promoting the arts and in supporting international education.
