Mission Statement

To create a world-class educational program built around sailing and the sea, uniquely designed to influence the growth of the economically challenged children into responsible citizens who care for themselves and all living things.

Description

YMF programs target middle school children from low income households in Stamford. Children all participate in thefree lunch program. Our experiential learning approach uses swimming and sailing to teach responsibility, teamwork, math, astronomy, the ecology and marine biology of Long Island Sound and leadership life-lessons both on and off thewater. Our curriculum is based on the Connecticut State science, math and social studies standards. It is implemented through a combination of swimming, sailing, after-school classroom activities, a summer session on the water, fall sailing and field trips. Instructors are certified teachers who have learned to sail and have additional certification to teach swimming. This innovative use of trained teachers makes our program unique. To date over 1,700 children have participated in the summer and after school programs.
