The mission of the Paul Taylor Dance Foundation is to maintain the Paul Taylor Dance Company, founded in 1954, as one of the finest ensembles in the world by: · Presenting Mr. Taylor's new and existing work, currently comprised of 119 dances, to audiences world-wide; · Sharing and exposing, through Taylor 2's education and community outreach, Mr. Taylor's work and distinct artistic style to audiences that are diverse in geography, age, education, economic background, and level of exposure to dance; · Ensuring that Paul Taylor has the financial resources to create two new works each year; · Documenting and preserving Mr. Taylor's existing and future works for audiences, dancers, scholars, and students.
The Paul Taylor Dance Company, founded in 1954, celebrates the artistry of Paul Taylor by performing his works throughout the United States and around the world. The Company has performed Mr. Taylor's works in over 60 countries and more than 450 cities. It has represented the United States at arts festivals in more than 40 countries and has toured extensively under the auspices of the U.S. Department of State. The New York Post hails the Company as "one of the few indisputably great dance companies of the world." The Paul Taylor Dance Company reaches an average annual audience of 120,000-130,000. Taylor 2 was established in 1993 to complement the activities of the Paul Taylor Dance Company by specifically focusing on education and outreach. One of Taylor 2's principal charges is to ensure that Mr. Taylor's works can be seen by audiences all over the world, unhindered by economic or logistical limitations. Engagements are flexible and customized to meet the needs of each community. A residency often consists of master classes and lecture demonstrations, in addition to performances in theaters and non-traditional venues. In selecting repertory for Taylor 2, Mr. Taylor chooses dances that span the broad spectrum of his work. Susan McGuire, a Paul Taylor Dance Company alumna, is the Director of both Taylor 2 and the Taylor School. No activity of the Paul Taylor Dance Foundation is more important or central to its mission than the creation of new work, and the Taylor Foundation recognizes the unique responsibility it has to nurture and support an artist of Mr. Taylor's stature during his lifetime. Mr. Taylor creates two new works a year on the Paul Taylor Dance Company. The creation, presentation, and preservation of Mr Taylor's works is partially funded through the Paul Taylor New Works Fund. Since the early 1990s, the Taylor Foundation has approached the creation of a dance as an integrated process that encompasses not only the six-week period that Mr. Taylor spends in the studio making the work and rehearsing the dancers, but the additional elements of research and development, design and production, presentation and marketing, and documentation and preservation. This comprehensive approach ensures that funds are available to create the work, successfully present it, and preserve it for future generations.
