Vox Pop's mission is to provide access to both marketable technical skills and media literacy in order to prepare underserved youth, ages 15-18, for a career or further education in the production/creation of media and/or related fields of interest in the growing global media culture. Youth will identify, research, and produce media that examine and reflect critical issues within their own lives and communities. This allows them to actively take part in their communities while also encouraging dialogue .
Vox Pop’s program consists of a series of training workshops hosted by adult community members that youth enrolled in the program attend. Youth progress through the program each year adding new skills by applying what they have learned in the workshops to a variety of media-based collaborative and individual projects. Each project equates to critical opportunities for growth. After completing a series of workshops, youth can then mentor newcomers to the program and facilitate media literacy workshops for community members. The program allows students to acquire marketable technical skills and literally connects learning with opportunities for work. In addition, the youth not only have caring adults working with them in the program, but they have a community of young people who they can discuss critical issues with and transform their thoughts and insight into media that can be shared.
