Mission Statement

The mission of the Perkins School is to continue a tradition of leadership and innovation in providing services for children, adolescents, and adults with disabilities and their families. We strive to achieve these goals in a home-like, stable and nurturing environment in a compassionate and cost-effective manner, based on the needs of the individual and with the flexibility to meet the needs of the community.

Description

For over 100 years the Perkins School has provided intensive support to children and adolescents who present challenges that exceed the capacity of traditional schools. The school was established in 1896 to provide residential and educational programs to a small group of mentally retarded children. However, by 1990 we made a decision to re-direct our services toward the ever-increasing and largely underserved population of children and adolescents with psychiatric impairments, most frequently the result of abuse and/or neglect. Perkins provides over 200 psychiatrically impaired children and adolescents annually with day and residential programs that help them learn as well as overcome their disabilities. The majority of students are from Massachusetts, although Perkins accepts referrals to the residential program from the New England states, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania
