InnerCity Tennis provides innovative educational programming, physical activity and tennis to ensure that the youth and families we serve develop a passion for lifelong physical well being, learning, exemplary individual character, and a personal commitment to improving the world we share.
Inner City Tennis (ICT) has taken a dynamic approach that teaches character values first and tennis skills second. ICT breaks down the game of tennis into essential skill elements and infuses winning values - such as perseverance, responsibility and serving others - into every game, drill and competition. The ICT curriculum, based on research by Minneapolis-based Search Institute, is carefully designed to deliver developmental assets that can protect youth from high-risk activities and positively affect their lives in the future.
The age difference between most InnerCity Tennis volunteer CMTs (coach/mentor/tutors) and participants is that of grandparent-grandchild, and the seniors offer so much more than tennis skills. They share their time and valuable life experiences with kids who are often in need of a caring relationship with an older adult. The age difference helps kids forge an immediate bond of trust with their coaches and provides role models they can rely on for encouragement, support and sometimes just an ear to listen.
