Mission Statement

The mission of American DanceWheels Foundation (ADF) is to make a significant contribution to the lives of individuals with ambulatory disabilities and their able-bodied partners through the opportunity to learn Wheelchair Ballroom and Latin Dancing.

Description

ADF gives participants a more social perspective than other wheelchair dance programs, because it allows students to dance with a spouse, family member, friend, or significant other employing traditional dance elements such as connection, lead, and follow. The American DanceWheels' written curriculum allows people to dance at social events, like weddings and clubs, using both manual wheelchairs and power wheelchairs. The Foundation meets this goal by teaching the ADF Wheel Oneā„¢ Syllabus to people with ambulatory disabilities, able-bodied partners, dance teachers, therapists, and adaptive sports and recreation professionals. Furthermore, the organization creates competition and performance opportunities for dancers with special interest or talent to give wheelchair dancesport visibility and credence within traditional society. Wheelchair Ballroom and Latin Dance creates an opportunity for individuals with ambulatory disabilities to participate in a conventional, highly social pastime that can be accessed regardless of one's physical ability, age or lifestyle. ADF employs the language of dance to break down the social barriers between the able-bodied and disabled worlds.
