Sonju Community Orchard and Garden

Description

Sonju Park is a 9.3 acre parcel of land donated to the City of Des Moines in 1996 by Daisy Sonju and her family. The park is adjacent to Parkside Elementary School and part of the Parkside Wetlands watershed. The creek on the upper part of the property drains into McSorley Creek and through Saltwater State Park.

The orchard consists mainly of apple trees planted 40 or more years ago. Friends of Sonju Park is removing invasive species, identifying salvageable trees, and replanting some trees over the next year.
