The New York Center for Children is an independent, privately funded, non-profit organization and is firmly committed to the following goals:
To provide INTERVENTION in cases of child physical or sexual abuse or neglect to protect children from harm, prevent or minimize further trauma for the child, protect society from the offender, and hold the offender accountable for his or her actions.
To enhance the COORDINATION among professional agencies involved in the intervention and investigation process of child abuse cases, thereby consolidating each agency’s role and expertise. This minimizes further trauma that children and non-offending family members may experience during the investigation, and enables the professionals involved to make decisions that are better informed and more efficient.
To provide EDUCATION in the areas of abuse awareness and prevention training to health professionals and the community.
All services are free.
The New York Center for Children is a child-friendly free clinic providing assessment and therapy services to victims of child abuse. Each child receives a thorough physical examination from a medical expert, and sensitive interviews and crisis counseling from specially trained social workers and psychologists. The Center works in coordination with the Police Department, the District Attorney's Office, and the Administration for Children's Services, increasing the effectiveness of each investigation, and reducing the potential for additional trauma to the child. The Center also offers professional training programs on diagnosis and treatment of child abuse, and abuse awareness and prevention programs to the general public.
