Mission Statement

Oakland Parents Literacy Project was founded in 1999 by a group of community and business leaders concerned with Oakland studentsâ persistently low literacy rates. Our organizationâ s mission is to help improve those rates by promoting family literacy in partnership with the school district. We attempt to bring literacy into the home, an make reading a life-long and family-oriented endeavor by demonstrating literacy techniques at events called Family Reading Nights, which are hosted throughout the district during the school year. We serve elementary school students because the early childhood years are the most important to a childâ s literacy development.

Description

The Oakland Parents Literacy Project is the largest non-profit, community-based organization that promotes student and family literacy within the Oakland Unified School District. OPLP supports increased parent involvement in Oakland schools and improved academic performance. OPLP hosts Family Reading Night, an event that encourages family literacy; organizes school site clean-ups; and sponsors several literacy-oriented activities each school year. In response to the fiscal crisis in the Oakland schools, OPLP has accelerated its efforts to support the school community.
