Propel Afterschool

Description

Propel Afterschool is a comprehensive K-12 after school program for children who attend Propel Schools in the Pittsburgh area-McKeesport, Homestead, Braddock Hills, the North Side, and Montour. The program features academic support and enrichment through applied technology, science, physical education, career development and workplace readiness, and immersion in the arts. Afterschool hours will be structured with daily scheduled activities that are consistent, linked to the regular school day, and supervised by teachers and staff already familiar to the students. This consistent staffing will be augmented by community business and civic leaders, area college students, and artists and experts in various fields who will mentor and nurture the students within their care. Students will become familiar with and use the resources right in their own neighborhoods and city. Public libraries, museums and theatres will become their playgrounds, but they will be playgrounds that will encourage creativity, imagination, and confidence. City and community leaders will be invited to connect with students and their families, encouraging them to use the rich resources of the city and joining them in becoming vocal advocates for children and their communities. High School students will explore careers through workforce preparation classes and a shadowing program that begins right in their own neighborhoods.
