Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide homeless cats with high-quality care in a safe, healthy, and

loving environment. We work to find safe, healthy, and loving permanent homes for the

cats in our care and to educate potential adopters and the general public about cat welfare

issues. We are the first cageless, no-kill shelter in the country and have been in existence since 1884.

We will never euthanize cats to create room to take in more cats.

Description

Nation's oldest cageless, no-kill cat shelter.

The current Shelter Director is rigid and has no people skills. Many staff are getting fired without a reason and many core volunteers are leaving. The cats are taken care of but the shelter now only wants highly adoptable cats with no medical or behavior issues, which is a complete reversal of what Gifford used to do. Taking in local cats is an extremely low priority for the shelter now, under this new director. The Board is out of touch with current animal welfare practices and does not respect the volunteers or staff.

Amazing place. Cats live in a spotless HOME, not a shelter, with their own or shared bedrooms that play classical music and audio books! They are obsessively cared for - in a GOOD way. In order to adopt, I went through a scrupulous background check that included a detailed application and references! I could not be more impressed with their operation and their caring staff and volunteers. My cat rocks.
