Here's a sample of our volunteer opportunities:VIEW AS
Mercy Housing, Inc. (MHI), a not-for-profit organization, was established in 1981 by the Sisters of Mercy as their response to the correlation between substandard housing and the health and education problems of the poor among whom the Sisters worked. To date, with a presence in 44 states, MHI has developed, preserved and financed more than 35,700 affordable homes nationwide, both rental and single family serving more than 117,000 adults and children on any given day.
In addition to providing quality, affordable housing for low and very-low income people, MHI sponsors on-site resident service programs focusing on four key areas: 1) Education - developing the academic and life skills of children and adults through parenting and life-skill classes, ESL, GED, computer technology and training and the Mercy Housing After School Program for children and youth; 2) Health and Wellness - connecting residents with available on and off-site health and wellness resources; 3) Economic Development - basic and advanced financial literacy classes and workshops, Earned Income Tax Credit classes and homeownership education classes; and 4) Civic and Community Involvement - empowering residents to work for positive improvement in their apartment communities, their neighborhoods and the larger community including voter registration, leadership development seminars and volunteer opportunities for youth and adults.
