Mission Statement

Camphill Communities - 20 in England, 2 in Wales, 15 in Scotland and 3 in Northern Ireland - are dedicated to social renewal through community building with children, youth, and adults with developmental disabilities. Camphill aspires to discover, support and enhance the potential and meaningful contribution of each person and encourages each person to master his or her own life in the context of family, community, and society, emphasizing both independence and interdependence. Camphill fosters and supports lively, viable communities that celebrate the individual and make educational, social, cultural, and environmental contributions to society. It is guided by the social, cultural and economic principles of the international Camphill movement founded by Dr. Karl Koenig, and is based on Anthroposophy, inspired by Rudolf Steiner Ph.D., a world-view which embraces a spiritual understanding of the human being and the universe.

Description

Camphill is an international movement of life-sharing communities designed to meet the needs of children, adolescents and adults with developmental disabilities through a dynamic combination of community life, the arts and meaningful work. Volunteers come from around the globe; some come for a short experience (i.e. six months to one year) while others make a longer-term commitment. Volunteers receive full room and board, medical insurance, vacation time and a modest personal allowance. Living, learning and working together, and building relationships with people of all ages and abilities, is both challenging and rewarding. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, be flexible and possess a willingness to becoming involved in the ongoing process of learning and community building, and being part of solving the challenges that arise. The Camphill approach honors the spiritual integrity of every human being, regardless of ability or circumstances, and recognizes the individual's need and right to lead a full life that includes material, emotional, social and spiritual needs.
