Here's a sample of our volunteer opportunities:VIEW AS
Our mission is to foster economic and urban revitalization in the city of Gloucester, Massachusetts. The primary purpose of the corporation is to facilitate community-wide participation in the planning of activities that affect the life of the community for years to come. This will be accomplished by promoting local ownership, management, and control of the sustainable economic resources in our area. The long term goal is to transform Gloucester into a high-tech seafood-processing center and engage the community in discussion about a long term plan of Urban Restoration.
We are participating in the organization of artists and art institutions into an advocacy entity called SEArts (Society for the Encouragement of the Arts). With a group of fishermen, seafood processors, and marketers we have reviewed the technology developed by the University of Massachusetts Marine Station to transform pelagics (herring and mackerel) into Surimi (crab or lobster meat analog). With the volunteer assistance of scholars from the System Dynamics program at MIT, we are now integrating all necessary physical and financial facets of the operation into one document that can be presented to any funding source for the creation of a turnkey Surimi plant operation. One pilot plant incorporating this technology is now operating in Iceland and another in Chile. Our plan is to have a Surimi plant in Gloucester ran by Gloucester Fish Inc., -- an entity that is separate from the GCDC. This firm will be incorporated as a private for profit corporation. It will be owned by local fishermen, seafood processors, and marketers.
