Dear Friend, Did you know that Delaware statistics parallel national statistics: 1 in 5 people are functionally illiterate. That means they cannot read and write well enough to perform basic everyday tasks. In addition, many people have come to our state from other countries, and need to learn English in order to survive in our culture. You can help! Our Basic Reading students very often had a negative experience in the classroom. By contrast, one-to-one instruction provided by Literacy Delaware can give them the support they need to succeed. English as a Second Language learners can benefit greatly in their jobs and communities if just one person has the time to meet with them to help develop their language skills. Literacy Delaware trains volunteers to work one on one with adults in the community who either need to learn basic reading or English as a foreign language. You choose a time and a place to meet; you have access to a large library of adult literacy materials and the support of the Literacy Delaware staff. We ask for two hours per week commitment.
