Mission Statement

Youth America, Inc., (YAInc.) is a not-for-profit, 501(c)3, Brooklyn-based community organization that was founded in 1984. Keith Lewis is the Executive Director and Founder of the organization. After graduating from Hampton University, where he played basketball on scholarship with former NBA star Rick Mahorn, Keith decided to start a summer basketball league for kids in his old neighborhood of Crown Heights, Brooklyn. This eventually led to the launch of Youth America, Inc., a multi-service agency that annually provides programming to more than 7,000 underserved Brooklyn youth and their families. The organization’s mission is to assist in the creation of a better society by administering a wide range of educational, cultural, recreational, workforce-development, health, and social activities for the enrichment of community residents.

Description

In 2004 Youth America created its Brooklyn Vogue initiative to provide high school students with career readiness training and paid internships at our organization's social entrepreneurship venture, Brooklyn Vogue, a women’s clothing store located in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Brooklyn Vogue's Bridge to Business Internship Program annually services 100 high school students and represents a best practices model for assisting students in meeting the career readiness objectives of the New York State Common Core Learning Standards. The program provides real-world experiences in fashion retail operations and student interns graduate with strong business acumen and a heightened sense of their ability to succeed in careers and business. www.Facebook.com/brooklynvogue
