May is Hunger Awareness Month! Donations made up almost 60% of the food Emergency Food Network provided to food pantries, meal sites, and shelters in Pierce County in 2021. However, we have already seen a decrease in these in-kind food donations so far in 2022. You can help by hosting a Food & Fund Drive with EFN! The food you donate will go directly to our 75+ Partner Programs to give to our neighbors in need and the funds will be used to purchase food and pay freight for donated truckloads of food. During this time of year, we want to encourage you to collect peanut butter for your drive! Peanut butter is a very versatile food, and great source of protein, so we love receiving it! Register your food drive here: https://efoodnet.org/driveform/ Questions? Contact CarolineC@efoodnet.org or (253) 584-1040

EFN’s Mother Earth Farm is an 8-acre organic farm located in the beautiful Puyallup Valley. The farm grows over 100 varieties of fruits and vegetables for Pierce County food pantries. Food from the farm is typically available to our neighbors in need within 24-hours of harvest. It would not be possible to provide this fresh food option to our neighbors in need without the help of volunteers. In the spring, volunteers at the farm assist with seeding, weeding, composting, and irrigation. In the summer and fall, the focus is on weeding and harvesting. We are looking for groups of 8-25 volunteers to come help out at the farm, while learning about gardening! If your club, youth group, church group, or coworkers would like to get involved, please contact us! We have availability on Fridays and Saturdays, either from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm or 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm. What are the volunteer qualifications? Experience: No farming or gardening experience is necessary! EFN staff will provide you with orientation, training, and supervision. Physical Requirements: Volunteers need to feel comfortable performing basic gardening tasks, this includes kneeling or sitting in the soil to plant seedlings or pull weeds, bending over or standing while using a weeding tool and lifting baskets or bins of harvested produce. Minimum Age: There is not a minimum age so youth groups and families of all ages are welcome! Youth ages 15 and under need to volunteer with a parent or guardian. All youth under the age of 17 will need to bring a signed Parental Consent Form. Additional questions? Please contact Emergency Food Network's Community Outreach VISTA at CarolineC@efoodnet.org or (253)584-1040

Mother Earth Farm is a unique farm-to-table program providing a fresh, organic food option to individuals and families in need within Pierce County. Your volunteer group will have the opportunity to adopt a predetermined number of rows of kale at Mother Earth Farm! You will be responsible for those plants from beginning to end. This means planting the seeds in spring, caring for the crop throughout the summer, and harvesting the produce twice during the season. The produce you grow will be at our food banks within 48-hours of harvest. Be prepared to learn about farming, play in the dirt, and have some fun while helping to grow organic, nutritious produce for our neighbors in need! Schedule: Groups are asked to commit to a minimum of 12 days (each day is a 3-hour session) between March - September March: Seeding April: Planting May - September: Fertilizing, Weeding, and Harvesting Group Size: To accomplish the tasks and goals set at each session, groups should plan to bring 8-15 volunteers each time. The more helping hands, the faster your task will be! Minimum Age: We do not have a minimum age to volunteer at the farm so youth groups and families are welcome!
