Mission Statement

The mission of MADD is to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking.

Description

MADD Tennessee is the state organization for Mothers Against Drunk Driving in TN. We work with twenty chapters across the state as well as coordinating elementary and high school programs, victim services, public awareness and educational programs, and legislative advocacy.

The Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Drivingkicked off in November 2006 with the goal of eliminating drunk driving permanently. The Campaign has four essential elements: MADD Tennessee Victim Services

MADD Tennessee Victim Services is available to assist those in Tennessee who have experienced the unexpected tragedy of a drunk driving death or injury. Unfortunately, while trying to understand, adjust to or heal from an injury, or to grieve the death of a loved one, survivors have also been thrust into the criminal justice system, which can be very confusing and frustrating to understand. MADD Tennessee Victim Services is here to assist through this difficult time.

Youth In Action

Underage drinking is more than a rite of passage. It's an invitation to clouded judgment, limited control and consequences that can last a lifetime. Young people across the country are working to change the current culture and make a difference in their communities.

Youth In Action (YIA) is a community based program that provides youth with the necessary skills to make change in their communities. YIA members work to reduce the social and retail availability of alcohol and change the norms that say underage drinking is a "rite of passage."

Instead of targeting high school students with a "don't drink "message, YIA looks at the whole environment that seems to condone underage drinking. From the store clerk that doesn't check IDs, to the parents who allow young people to drink in their homes, to the officer who pours out the drink and send the kids home- YIA members look for solutions in the community. It isn't the individual we must change, but the behaviors and attitudes that say underage drinking as acceptable. The YIA teams focus on laws and policies that can affect that behavior because that is the best place to make changes.

Court Monitoring

The Governor's Highway Safety Office has recently awarded MADD Tennessee a grant to offer MADD's Court Monitoring program, designed to improve the effectiveness of the criminal justice system.

Alcohol-impaired driving is one of the most frequently committed crimes in the country. Every year, it kills someone every 30 minutes.

Court Monitoring is designed to engage the court system and the community in a constructive dialogue that ultimately improves the criminal justice system. Establishing relationships among all facets of the criminal justice system is the cornerstone of a successful program. The court system determines individual guilt or innocence. It also sets parameters of an offender's punishment, restitution and rehabilitation.

MADD's Court Monitoring program was developed to ensure that there is a swift and appropriate sentencing of DUI/ DWI cases.

MADD knows that concerned citizens can transform society. By taking action in the community, lives will be saved. MADD Tennessee seeks volunteers to get involved with this new program. Volunteers are trained by a Project Coordinator. Some of the requirements include a good open mind and critical thinking skills. Individuals must be able to attend court on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, have good attention to detail. Ethical behavior and confidentiality are a must in this position.
