Mission Statement
To provide a quality, inclusive preschool program to children of diverse abilities and backgrounds in a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment that promotes respect and acceptance.
Description
Open Door was founded in 1975 by a young Austin couple who wished to enroll their son with Down syndrome in the same program as their daughter. After being turned away from numerous programs on account of their son's disability, they decided it was time to take action and fix the lapse in Austin's childcare programming: They founded Open Door as a non-profit preschool that would serve the needs of ALL of Austin's children.
Open Door is one of the few programs in the community that is proactive in enrolling children with special needs. Approximately 25% of our children have disabilities or are considered to be at "high risk." We also serve families of diverse income levels through funding from the City of Austin, Travis County, and our internal program, Project Helping Hand. Over 30% of our families receive tuition subsidies. Open Door was the first preschool in Austin to be accredited by the NAEYC.
