Description
Middle and High School Students
science, technology, engineering, math
Currently working schools in GA, NC and VA through Ten80 Student Racing Challenge: NASCAR STEM Initiative. This project based learning competition uses 1:10 scale radio controlled vehicles to boost problem solving ability and skills in science, tech, engineering, math and business / marketing. Student teams compete in a points race to optimize variables on a scale vehicle.
Mentors do not need knowledge of vehicles or racing to help student pit crews. Most teams just need adults to help with problem solving and basic math skills.
Graphic designers, marketing, PR and business professionals work with students as they locate sponsors for their NASCAR style race team.
Some teams use SolidWorks 3D CAD programs to test vehicle design in a virtual wind tunnel.
Because cost of entry is low, schools with typically underrepresented students are able to compete.
