Mission Statement

By incorporating parenting skill development with literacy-building activities and individual tutoring, the DC Family Literacy Project increases the literacy skills of children who have or have had an incarcerated or absent parent, increases the academic skills and self-confidence of absent parents, and provides an opportunity for children and their absent parents to strengthen their family relationships.

Description

The DC Family Literacy Project works with the Safe Haven Buckmon House Treatment Facility to provide individual tutors for adult males who are recovering from physical and emotional illnesses. The students range in age from teenagers to mature adults, and they range in education levels from complete illiteracy to partially completed college studies.
