Mission Statement

Zeitgeist's mission is to enliven today's music and expand its public with performances that absorb, stimulate, and hearten. Within our community, our role is to bring compelling and entertaining performances of contemporary music to our audiences and to further enrich the musical experience of these audiences through innovative programs designed to draw people into the music of our time.

Description

Zeitgeist, a small new music chamber ensemble consisting of two percussion, piano, woodwinds, and violin, is one of the oldest and most successful new music groups in the country and the only full-time chamber new music ensemble in the Twin Cities. Zeitgeist is based in St. Paul and conducts the bulk of its program activities for audiences in the Twin Cities with a special emphasis on performing work by Minnesota artists. We present an annual concert series at our venue, Studio Z, and carry out a variety of programs, including THE ERIC STOKES SONG CONTEST (for amateur composers), ZEITGEIST: BACK TO SCHOOL (projects for K-12 students) TUESDAY SALON (a composer's salon presented with the American Composers Forum) and ZEITGEIST/COMPOSER WORKSHOP (for emerging professional composers). Zeitgeist operates Studio Z, where we present our own performances as well as performances by other new music artists in our community. To bring our work to an audience beyond our own metropolitan area, Zeitgeist tours and produces recordings in partnership with innova Recordings.
