Mission Statement

Y-NOW Mentoring Program aims to break the cycle of incarceration seen by youth with incarcerated parents. It fulfills this mission by promoting Positive Youth Development among young people with incarcerated parents. Y-NOW does this by cultivating healthy youth-adult relationships in a safe community.

Y-NOW, formerly known as Project N.O.W. (New Outlook Within), is the mentoring component of the YMCA Safe Place Services branch in Louisville, KY. Since 1996, Y-NOW has been delivering unique, intensive mentoring programs for young people in Louisville. Over the years, we have worked with a variety of youth populations including those who were court-referred, youth who had failed previous school year, 8th graders transitioning to high school, Hurricane Katrina evacuees, and youth who were wards of the state (Foster Care) transitioning to independent living, etc.

Over the years, our funding has come from a variety of sources, including federal grants (Office of Juvenile Justice & Delinquency Prevention, Department of Health & Human Services), Metro United Way, Louisville Metro Government, corporate sponsors and many individuals.

Currently, we deliver a program designed exclusively for children with incarcerated parents. These youth are 11-15 and have at least one parent incarcerated. Our primary outcomes address academic achievement, youth empowerment, and breaking the cycle of incarceration.
